Further Issues of Social Control

The four techniques of social control-spontaneous field control, manipulated field control, command, and reciprocity-are operative in all areas of society, but they are not always sufficient to bring about the desired state of events. They act directly on the person or group to be controlled, and there are limits to the effectiveness of direct control. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement the techniques of direct social control with the following methods of roundabout control:

1 By affecting personality: Control can be used to change a person's personality so that a hitherto ineffectual stimulus will now lead to the desired response.

2 By affecting roles: A person's response to a stimulus depends largely up-on the expectations of the role he is playing; thus by changing the con-tent of the role, control can bring about a shift in responses to stimuli.
